SCD occurs among about 1 out of every 365 Black or African-American births and 1 out of every 16,300 Hispanic-American births.
About 1 in 13 Black or African-American babies is born with sickle cell trait. Symptoms include pain crises and swelling of hands and feet, leg ulcers, vision problems, strokes and more.

These are ife-changing diagnoses that happen every day. Many studies suggest that environmental and socioeconomic factors have contributed to the increased risk of pancreas disease among African Americans.
